Remain Secure While Working from Home

Increasing fear over the global pandemic Coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to grasp everyone around the world.  To help stem the spread of the virus, most private companies and some government agencies have resorted to a work-from-home setup for their staff. This highly benefits employees’ safety—however the set up could also lead to an increase in security risks such as malware attacks, viruses, ransomware, and other cybercrimes.

Scammers have found various opportunities to scam money out of victims, intentionally targeting people during a time of uncertainty. It’s not too far off to consider that anybody, especially those working from home, could be a victim. Anybody can fall victim to scams and cyberattacks which is why it’s important to keep these best practices in mind when working from home:

1. Use strong passwords. It is very important to use unique passwords for your WiFi, work laptop, and other online accounts. Utilise the use of 2FA and password managers to keep your passwords secured.


2. Utilise the use of a secure VPN. A virtual private network (VPN) should be used so that you can establish a secure network connection. A VPN secures your device’s internet connection and protects your data through encryption. It serves as a virtual tunnel that safeguards your online information.


3. Beware of phishing emails. If you receive an email from a stranger you should assess the link’s legitimacy before clicking on any links (links could be within text or images). It is also good practice to check that either the sender is from a legitimate organisation or this email is one you have been expecting to receive. If in doubt, toss it out.


4. Protect your devices with a security software. You should invest in an antivirus software like Trend Micro Maximum Security that will protect your devices against any type of threats.


5. Always be updated on national and global news. Since the world is currently battling a global pandemic, you should always be on top of any information to avoid being scammed; World Health Organisation (WHO) can provide you with the latest when it comes to Coronavirus.
